Form 3 Literature Component Texts 2012

The following are the Form 3 literature texts for all the zones. My preference is The Railway Children, an easy-to-follow story with many moral values. Around the World in Eighty Days is also an interesting novel with many delightful adventures the students will surely like. Click here for another excellent link on this novel. How I met Myself is rather abstract I must say. Happy teaching!

I have something to ask about
This story : HOW I MET MYSELF
SELANGOR, W.P KUALA LUMPUR, W.P PUTRAJAYA. NEGERI SEMBILAN, MELAKA
What your opinion about the content and message? Becoz somehow I felt that the story is not really can get the right way to bring positive values because not align with Islam believe. I just wanna ask,to the extend of my knowledge :)

Thanks,
Best Regards,Assalamu'alaikum.

dear cahaya,
thank you for your question. i understand your concern. i shall try to answer it this way- literature has no boundaries because it hinges on expression and creativity. it is not only rich in language but also in content. if you think it is opposed to Islam then it is the teacher's job to explain this to his or her students. literature gives poetic license to the writer to express his ideas. there are other many other work i've studied which talk about Christianity and the bible, but that does not mean i will be converted. i learned from the different perspectives and in the process became more tolerant of others. this is essentially where we as teachers can shape the minds of the young. do we have to shun every literary piece that appears different or 'oppose' to our religion? i think not. it is through literature that our horizon expands.

Salam Puan Rahmah, I'd like to apologise first for 'butting' in to respond to Anonymous 15Feb's question. I'm also teaching at a rural area in Kelantan (near my hometown). Most of my students have low proficiency and I can safely say that almost all of them are still not sure when and how to use verb 'to be' (is/are /was/were). I try to make English as fun as possible by keeping it simple for them esp when it comes to grammar rules. And I use a lot of materials with graphics and pictures so they can better understand the lessons. When I was in Ipoh, I used to buy a number of Singapore workbooks. I love their materials which are simple and properly planned. I find that some of the workbooks published here tend to be 'cramped' exercises (I guess it has something to do with the cost)

I show them movies like "Tangled" (later I use the song "I've Got A Dream" to introduce rhyming words to them), "Cars" (boys love it!) and "Toy Story" (moral lessons - friendship etc). They used to ask me to display the Malay subtitles but I insisted on English subtitles so they're 'forced' to be aware of English words being used. I'm thinking of showing maybe "Kungfu Panda", "Finding Nemo" etc later this year. I also use songs like Uncle Kraker's "Smile" to show examples of similes.

Once in a while, have activities like word games / word search / crossword puzzles etc. Maybe you can use materials that can catch their attention. One that I like is Tcer Ita's materials to teach 'Heir Conditioning' (she used Upin & Ipin) here : https://www.facebook.com/media/set/?set=a.167410643374838.34761.140229032759666&type=3

I talk to them in simple English whenever possible. Just start with 'Good morning', 'How are you ?', 'Where are you going ?' etc. I also insist that they ask for permission to go out in English. Even if they're shy and reluctant at first, I ask them to practise - word by word, if they must - before I let them go. Sure some students tend to 'tahan saja' until I leave the class but after a while, seeing that there's nothing to be embarrassed about not being able to speak English properly, their attitudes improve.

Make jokes - I'm sure you can think of some. Uh, I actually did my degree in Translation so I tend to speak to them in both English and later translate it to BM. Habit, lol. Some teachers probably do not think it's a good idea but I think my students feels less intimidated when I do that.

Oh dear, malu pula rasa tulis banyak-banyak. Saya pun bukan pandai sangat - sekadar nak berkongsi sahaja :-)

wassallam liza,
thank you very much for sahring your insights..this is the purpose of setting up the blog- to get teachers talking about what they do in the classroom :) I think you have done a lot for your students and this reflects one thing- that you are a passionate English teacher! Keep it up!

Hi I was wondering if you can share the marking scheme of PAPER 2 since there are changes to the marks allocation for Writing (25 marks) and Novel Question (12 marks). And do you have the layout answer of how our PMR students are expected to answer for the novel part. Your contributions are highly appreciated.

Dear Puan Rahmah,
Thank you so much for uploading this. I am a student in Melaka but I would prefer to study The Railway Children or Around the World in 80 Days. Can you please upload the novels because I cannot buy them in Melaka. I would really, really appreciate your help. Thank you very much.

Yours truly,
Sabrina
