Literature Component: Form 5 novels 2011

The book loan scheme teacher informed me today that the school has received the Form 5 novel for 2011. I assume Johor will be doing "The Curse" as this was the title she mentioned today.  Since your schools have also probably received the books, it's not a secret anymore. So here are the novels:

(Pahang,Terengganu, Johor,Sabah,Sarawak and Labuan)

(Selangor,Kuala Lumpur,Putrajaya, Negeri Sembilan and Malacca)
(Perlis,Kelantan,Kedah, Penang and Perak)

Happy browsing!

  1. I find books for Literature components (form 1 to form 5) have been poorly selected. The Pearls, for instance, is a very good book but it is hardly read by teachers in several schools I know in this rural area. Teachers resorted to giving simplified versions and aynopsis defeating the inteded purpose. I cannot help feeling many teachers themselves are unable to understand it! Over the years I had groups of pupils coming for help.

  2. salam pakcik,
when we first started the literature component, i think everyone got too excited so they chose classics or texts u can call the 'canon' of literature- considered the most important of a particular time period or place or simply because they are authorised work. i think we forgot that we are not dealing with literature the big L but 'literature component' to encourage reading and improve language. however, you will find that the new list for 2010 will be much lighter and manageable. a welcome change :)

  3. I agree with Al-Manar. For the 5 years that I have taught form 5 English, my students in Penang really enjoyed THE PEARL. The reason, it has a lot of moral values and easy to understand. I did a close reading with them, page by page, chapter by chapter. Not many English teachers are doing that, especially those not majoring in English. They only use the synopsis books. Yes, I agree that the texts chosen must be lighter, but also easy to understand and deals with every day issues. The truth is, studying literature makes my students becoming more matured in handling their every day issues. Thank you.

  8. dear anonymous,
a fren in Perak told me her state is doing 'Catch us if U can'. if selangor is in the same zone , then u will be doing this text. if not, it has to be the other one then. good luck!

  12. The CURSE is full of grammatical mistakes. it was poorly edited. Can the school change the novel?

  13. can u show some examples, perhaps via email? if the previous practice is taken as a model, yes u can but this will mean you have to ask your students to buy the text.

  14. It seems to me that English teachers or teacher-bloggers are unaware of the many mistakes or discrepancies in the F5 Lit component, or perhaps they don't want to address the issue. There is something wrong with the translation of the poem 'Are You Still Playing The Flute?' Nobody seems to know about the missing lines in the poem.

  15. dear anonymous,
tx for your comments. it would be great if you could enlighten us on the mistakes. this blog will be a perfect place to discuss it. this is what this blog is all about, sharing ideas and opinions. perhaps teachers have been less critical of the translations...

  17. dear anonymous,
look no further. go to top of blog and click on 'literature' tab. These materials should be sufficient for the time being before more books are published. btw, 'step by wicked step' is not difficult. it could be the british english that's bothering you nd the dialogues (too many ya) good luck!

  18. hey, i'm a kl form 5 student and my school is using 'can us if u can' as our novel.. do u have any idea where i can find it ASAP

  19. dear form 5 student,
i assume that ur teacher has decided to choose 'catch us if u can' instead of the novel assigned for ur state. otherwise u will not have probs looking for the text as it is provided by the book loan scheme in ur school. hey...perhaps u can try mph? the texts should be available in bookshops as 'the curse' is available in my local bookshop. all the best :)

  26. I really love The Pearl, and I miss teaching it. Anyway, Sarawak has been assigned The Curse but I find the book so tiresome as it dwells in gossips. I also find the use of flashbacks excessive. It certainly confuses my students, especially the weaker ones. I may just abandon The Curse in favour of Catch Us If You Can. !

  27. dear anonynymous,
i can't agree with you more! 'tiresome' indeed! i find that there are too many events to remember. 'The Pearl' has depth and a strong story that's memorable but not 'The Curse'. i'm switching to Catch Us If You Can too next year. Best!

  28. As mentioned above, is it possible to switch "The Curse" with other novels?
