  3. assalamualaikum pn rahmah. i really love english and speak english as well. my english was okay but ever since i entered into a boarding school, most of them were like "bajet speaking" . i was shocked. so next year gonna be my fifth year in that school and i realised my english is getting rusty as i don't have friends to speak english with. entering debate and other english activities doesn't really help. i really need to improve my english, but how

    1. dear anonymous,
i understand what you mean...it's like you feel your english is going down the drain? hmmm...my advice is to continue what you've been doing in you former school..things that made your english better as you have said. was it reading? was it listening to the english programmes? speaking more english? (i know this is almost zero in sbp haha). don't blame the situation but ask yourself what you can still do as a student o.k. all the best!

  20. Dear Puan Rahmah, I am just learning to be an Eng tuition teacher with no background of teaching skills or high education. But I do have good command of Eng speaking n writting. Can u pls share some tips on how do I maximise what I teach in just two hours for every session. I only meet my students once a week. My intension when I started was to help n contribute. Alhamdulillah students kept increasing n I have many UPSR candidates for year 2016 including my own son. Please I do hope u are kond to share ur thoughts n tips on how I can help the poor kids. UPSR is just another 8 months. I fear that I wont be in time to help them especially with the new system which requires them to answer creatively..... thinking our of the box. Thank you in advance. 22. Dear Puan Rahmah, it's so nice to see a fellow English teacher who is passionate about teaching. I am a new teacher (just got posted January this year). If you don't mind, I have a few questions to ask you..

    1) For extremely weak students, how do you go about teaching them? I have felt like a failure this past year because these weak students could barely speak English and they don't show any enthusiasm at all. I mostly asked them to do fill in the blanks activities just to pass time and to prevent them from making noise. However, for better students, I did lots of interesting activities. I don't want to make the same mistake next year, but I am not sure how to teach these weak students.

I have decided not to follow the syllabus. I want to start from the bottom, teaching them word groups and eventually progressing to simple sentence. I will also focus more on introducing new vocabulary. Grammar will not be my main concern. What do you think?

    2) Do you speak Malay at all during lessons? Sometimes when students ask for meaning of words, I find it easier to speak in Malay rather than spending time explaining in English.

Sorry for my long questions, but I enjoy asking senior teachers for their advices. I find that I can learn a lot from you seniors.

    1. dear anonymous,
sorry for this very late reply. the school term just began so...of course it's always a challenge to teach weak students but don't despair. getting them to like reading will be a good start...simple readers perhaps. there's no quick fix method as you well agree am sure but the teacher has to down to their level and teach the basics. my response to your second question is yes! and don't feel bad about it. however, too much of BM is not helpful too so find a balance. Best :)
