Modules Galore!

Recently, PPD Kluang in collaboration with Kluang District English Panel, set up a Quantum Leap Taskforce to produce three modules for SPM candidates. The taskforce consists of 20 teachers and we divided ourselves into three groups. Since Kluang was 5th for English at the state level for SPM 2017, we are trying our best to better the record to Top Three for SPM 2018 in sha Allah...I hope the modules will be very useful for teachers and students in Kluang. There are three modules for three groups- Galus, Sederhana and Cemerlang. The modules are specifically examination-focussed and will be distributed to schools by PPD Kluang.

Thanks to all committee members for their contribution and Pn Nurasyikin Abu Bakar (DELO Kluang) for her support in making this a success.

PPD Kluang Taskforce Meeting

I chaired this meeting with a team of teachers recently. Guess what? We have been tasked to build three types of SPM English modules for galus, sederhana and cemerlang students. Modules again? Yup you read right 😆 But since it's a directive from PPD and JKd Kluang, here we go! Teachers were broken into three groups and team leaders had to report back. The modules will be exam-focused based on Papers 1 and 2. Our next meeting is scheduled on the 10th July. Meanwhile yours truly has her hands full:

1. MPSM State Level Module (Forecast Questions) - completed and awaiting editing meeting next
    Tues (26th)
2. STF-MOZAC- SASEM Immersion Programme (14th July) - yet to be done
3. The next chapter of my forthcoming book - not done 😞
4. English Seminar in Kota Tinggi - not done

JOM BALIK AWAL PROGRAMME with 2017 SPM Candidates

Every little bit helps I believe, so here goes the materials I used for "Program Jom Balik Awal 2017" for 140 SPM candidates this year. I decided to deal with three poems namely A Poison Tree, Charge of the Light Brigade and The Living Photograph. Besides I also revised formats for Directed Writing and Continuous Writing (tips on how to read two-parter questions). I knew there wasn't enough time to finish the poem questions therefore I made sure each student received a copy of the key towards the end so that they can check their answers later. Feel free to use and share.

There are two modules altogether: Form 1 and Form 4. We have infused i-think and HOTS wherever possible and answer keys are provided. Plus....there is the power point to consolidate teaching the poem too!

Not forgetting Madam Lew Mui Lan (Chairperson, District English Language Committee/Principal of SMK Canossian Convent, Kluang) and Tn Hj Musa Muhammad (Language Officer for English, PPD Kluang) May Allah bless our efforts.

Literature Module Meeting

Date: 25th May 2015
Venue: SM Sains Sembrong, Kluang

Today, we welcomed a team of fourteen teachers to a meeting to discuss the Literature Component module based on the current texts for Forms 1 and 4. Before we started I gave some input on what modules area and what features good modules should have.

It felt good to be active again in the district although I know one has to have a  lot of patience with module-building. I've had countless experience in module-building and it is not easy. It can be a lonely affair when you sit down and edit those modules yourself. So this time around, I'm overseeing the project. It was good to have a team of young teachers and some senior ones- a nice mix. It is good exposure for them in their career path.

The teachers involved are Radhika (SASEM), Norini (SMK Dato Hj Hassan Yunos), Sharon (SMK Jalan Kota, Team Leader for Form 4), Mogana (SMK Jalan Mengkibol), Maisaarah (SMK Tengku Aris Bendahara), Nur Azliena Azis (SMK Dato Ibrahim Majid), Mohd Najib (SMK DAto Abdul Rahman Andak), Fikri (SMK Seri Kota), Nursyuhada, (SMK Sultan Abdul Jalil), Nurashikin (SMK Seri Intan Team Leader for Form 1), Shiknesvary (SMK Canossian Convent), Aizat (SMK Layang-Layang) and Nur Ezza (SMK Tinggi Kluang).

We will meet again in July to piece things together. Meanwhile, enjoy the hols and the marking :)

Happy teaching!

What do we need modules for?

Hundreds of modules have been produced by PPDs, JPNs and individuals to help students excel in public examinations. Sometimes one wonders the effectiveness of these modules. The truth is there is no one perfect module. It's all up to the teacher to adapt what they are given. Here's one built in 2008 by PPMP, Johor Education Department. Click on the image or you can also go to 'Modules' on top to download.

Happy teaching cikgu!

'Catch us If You Can' booklet

I will not grow weary of people who ask for materials, advice or help but never say 'thank you' or even give credit to me as the owner of original materials taken from this blog because this blog is part of my small contribution and deed (amal) as a teacher. It is a medium in which I can share anything useful related to English Language teaching (ELT) or bridge teachers and students with useful links related to ELT. What is knowledge if not shared?

Lest we forget...the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said:

"When a person dies, all his deeds come to an end except three: sadaqah jaariyah (ongoing charity, e.g. a waqf or endowment), beneficial knowledge (which he has left behind), or a righteous child who will pray for him."

(Reported by Al-Tirmidhi)

Here's the link to a little booklet which is a combination of my students' work and internet materials for the novel CATCH US IF YOU CAN. Please do edit as necessary as it is not the be all and end all.

Happy Teaching!

Module for 'Catch Us if You Can'

In the process of writing a module for my students to use next year. They will be the first batch taking SPM and that means a lot to SASEM! I hope I can finish in time so that all fifth formers will be able to use it from January. However, I have been under the weather the whole of last week- low blood pressure (I probably over exerted myself playing badminton with the students in Khalifah Hall...) dizziness (thanks to Azhar for sending me home on Thursday. All I did was sleep sleep and sleep..) and now an itchy throat! With my lappy now trying to work on that module. Pray that I can finish my job :)

Grammar and Vocabulary Module for Average and Slow Learners

Date: 9 Oct 2010
Venue: PKG Kluang

Fifteen teachers sat together to brainstorm and build two modules for use in 2011- Hafiz, Fuziana, Atifa, Komala, Nirmala, Kavitha, Azura, Izzuan, Muzaffar, Rose, Nurhazirah, Fariha, Rafkah, Farhan and yours truly. We collectively decided to build a module on grammar and vocabulary with a test item after every unit.  The modules are meant for average and slow learners in which we will control the structures to suit the levels of the target groups. We hope to train teachers to use the modules next year and also to collaborate with PKPSM to publish the modules for Kluang district. We are also considering publishing them under Panel Perunding Mata Pelajaran (PPMP) for the state. Thanks to En Mahyudin, Language Officer  PPD Kluang and all! I shall oversee the editing with Fuziana (GC from SMK Simpang Renggam) in November.

PPMP Meeting

Top: En Shan (our Principal Asst. Director English Language, JPNJ) wrapping up the year's work
Middle: Theva, Shirley and I
Bottom: Theva, Shirley and Rani

Date: 18 November 2009
Venue: PLGM Bandar Tenggara, Kulai

The PPMP meeting was held to prepare materials for the Spelling Competition in 2010 and to edit any incomplete modules for PMR, SPM and UPSR. Although this was my second meeting here, I still got lost (I have a habit of doing this hehe). To cut a long story short, a young woman who was selling kuih by the roadside showed me the right directions. Suffice to say our mission was accomplished!

The Pearl Module

This is a module I have been using for the past five years. It is edited annually to accomodate the feedback given by students. Thus far, it has helped my students to deal with "The Pearl". Next year will not see any novels and I'm sure many teachers will be relieved. The BPK prescribed too many literature texts previously in what should be a component of the mainstream syllabus. Imagine having to deal with six poems and five short stories in Fm4! It's maddening! Teachers are pressured to spend more time teaching literature than the four language skills. It has become literature with a big 'L'. Well, the good news is in 2010, there will be fewer texts to teach and I'm one happy teacher :)

PPMP Speaking Module

Date: 18-20th August 2009
Venue: BTPN Skudai, Johor Bharu

Today, I oversaw the module-building for the state PPMP (Panel Perunding Mata Pelajaran). We have decided to deal with 'Speaking' as this is a neglected skill in the classroom. Members in my group were Vasanthi (Kota Tinggi), Yusof (Muar), Mrs Jacob (Segamat), Sumila (Johor Bharu), Nuraisyah (Johor Bharu) and Sanizah(Mersing). Although we were short of members, we are confident we will do a good job once the module is pieced together.

MGCJ Module Building Meeting (2), PKG Kluang, 2 July 2009

The second module building session for sharing best practices in teaching was held at PKG Kluang and we had a fruitful although tiring meeting as it ended at 4 p.m. The module builders and trainers were Adeline (Batu Pahat), Tan Bea Lea (Segamat), Syeikh (Mersing), Norzieha (Pontian), Ramesh (Johor Bharu), Manyamaran (Kulai) and Rahmah and Hafiz (Kluang). I had to rush to school at 12.15 to carry out the LET and panel meeting for my English panel and returned to the PKG at 1.30 p.m. Halfway through the discussion, I thought the panel was not paying attention anymore to the pesentations. Everyone was busy editing his own material! It was actually very tiring to listen to all the presentations and to make comments alone. And yet it had to be done so that we have the best materials to be presented during the course. Besides, producing quality materials should be foremost in a GC's work. However, all in all, we had a variety of materials to choose from for the training session later. Reaching home that day, I grabbed 'lunch' at 4.45p.m (there was no more lunch at the PKG by 1.30) and hit the sack at 9 p.m. The dummy is now with me and I will proceed with the final editing. Thanks to all involved.

MGCJ Module Building Meeting, PKG Kluang, 25 June 09

Today, I chaired the state level meeting of PMR and SPM module-building session for Majlis Guru Cemerlang Johor 2009 roadshow in PKG Kluang. As a matter of fact I was in charge of the SPM English group but Suresh, the MGCJ secretary had asked me to brief the PMR module builders too. The meeting went well except for some frantic calls from teachers who did not receive the calling letter in time :) The SPM group agreed to deal with two areas namely, writing and listening/speaking where we intend to share best practices in the classroom. I personally think listening and speaking have been neglected in the English classroom for a long time. We had a great discussion on what should be included in the 6-hour course. For writing, we will look at controlled, semi-controlled (guided) and free-writing and for listening/speaking, we have decided to focus on practical pair work, group work and large class approaches. We will present our parts during the 2nd meeting on the 2nd July 2009 for team feedback and editing. My team consists of nine English excellent teachers: Adeline (Batu Pahat), Ramesh (Johor Bharu), Norziha (Pontian), Sheikh Fauzi (Mersing), Mrs Jacob (Segamat), Manymaran (Kulai), Hafiz (Kluang) and Renuka (Muar).

District English Panel Meeting (6 Feb 2009)

The first district English Panel meeting was held today in SMCC between 3-6p.m. The meeting was chaired by Madam Tan, the Panel's Chairperson. Present with us was En Mahyudin Salim, the Language officer from the PPD who briefed the Heads of Panels on the 2008 PMR English performance. Amongst other things, he urged all schools to consolidate their teaching skills and share their best strategies in the teaching of English. He highlighted the under-performing schools as well and encouraged them to work harder. En Mahyudin also kindly consented to give away tokens of appreciation to WISE module writers. They were Pn Ong Yim Lean (SMK Dato Hj Hassan Yunos), Cik Farhana Omar (SMK Tmn Sri Kluang), Cik Mawarni Othman (SM Convent Kluang), Cik Nor Huda Mad Khaliq Khalish (SMK Kahang Timur), Pn Norazah Ngatiran (SMK Tmn Kluang Barat), Pn Nur Atiffa Atim (SM Belitong), Cik Sam Henda Abd Samad (SMK Teknik), Cik Saraladevi Mogan (SMK Sri Lalang) and Pn Rahmah Hj Sayuti (SM Convent, Kluang). Many thanks to the writers who worked with me to produce the module and to the PPD for its unrelenting support. 22 schools in the district were each given 37 copies of the module.

Two new English GC were also present (Pn Nur Atiffa Atim and En Hafiz from SM Belitong). It is my hope that they will contribute to the district panel in more ways than one. As the Vice-chair of the District English Panel, I briefed the Heads on Panel on the "Classroom Innovation Competition for English Teachers', a new activity for the district. Each school is to send an entry by August this year. Creative teachers should use this platform to share their best practices with other English teachers. It is hoped that the activity will discover and acknowledge creative and innovative teachers who have done a lot in their classrooms but do not have the opportunity to showcase their work.
