PPMP Meeting, SMK Tinggi Segamat

Date: 17th June 2013 (Monday)
Venue: SMK Tinggi Segamat

The PPMP meeting today was chaired by Mr Shanmuganathan A/L Suppiah, Principal Assistant Director (English), JPN Johor. Among others he shared the following points with all members:

• Remedial Instruction for secondary schools from Forms 1-5: teachers teaching the last set (based on the diagnostic test given by BPG) will be given training on how to teach end classes
• three teachers from Johor were trained by the U.S Embassy and ELTC trainers on the teaching methods
• 75% of our students pass English but 25% needs remedial programme
• The use of the mother-tongue to teach English: 85-95% of instruction must be in English (according to American experts). Spanish teachers in the U.S.A use 100% Spanish to teach and students are able to pick up the language within four months
• 1000 Stars Programme involving UPSR, Remedial Class, PMR and SPM: PPMP will run the programme with the assistance from JU's in the respective district

The first PPMP meeting was held today and chaired by Tn Hj Mohd Nor A. Ghani, Johor Education director. I certainly hope this is not the last. When it was my turn to speak I reported on a writing module the SPM PPMP is working on. As the chairperson for SPM English, I raised three matters:

• the need to reevaluate the role of PPMP in the state- the role of PPMP has been producing module after module. There are questions as to whether these modules reach the schools and as to their effectiveness. I'm glad the Mathematics chairperson echoed my suggestion.My point was is there a real need for so many modules and is this the only role of the PPMP? We need to organise other things like conventions, ideas market, innovations etc. 
• that schools rejuvenate it's co curricular activites at the school level- most schools only prepare students if there are competitions at the district or state levels.In this way, the English environment is kept alive in schools. This is in line with MBMMBI policy.
• the quality of teacher's teaching and competency are more important- this can be achieved by having courses for teachers particularly when we have many new teachers and Heads of Panel now.

PLAN J Meeting

Date: 22 Oct 2010
Venue: SMK Spg Renggam, Kluang

Mr Shanmuganathan (Principal Assistant Director, JPNJ) chaired a meeting to revise PLAN J for Forms 1-5 and also for primary schools. We broke into small groups and managed to produce a draft which still needs fine-tuning before distributing to schools.

JPNJ MBMMBI Meeting

Date: 25 August 2010
Venue: SMK Sri Lalang, Kluang

More then 60 JUs, PMR and SPM State Consultancy Panel members attended the MBMMBI meeting chaired by Mr Shanmuganathan, Johor State Principal Assistant Director today. Although it was Ramadhan, everyone seemed to be in full spirits. Amongst the matters raised and discussed in the meeting were:

• all English programmes will now be under MBMMBI 
• MAS module and other modules produced by the PPMP (Panel Perunding Mata Pelajaran) will be distributed to all schools in CD form. ( I need to resend the module my group produced "Speak With Confidence")
• All claims must reach JPN by the 8th of the month
• Lesson Study vrs Immersion- JPNJ would like to adopt this approach
• PPMP directory ready to be distributed to schools
• District English Panel- the need to coordinate activities in the state to prevent non-performing panels
• KSSR (Kurikulum Standard Sekolah Rendah) - training of JUs will be after Hari Raya and it is an on-site training approach

 It was good to meet old friends!!

Panel Perunding Mata Pelajaran (PPMP) State Level Meeting 1/2010

Venue: SMK Indahpura, Kulai

The first state PPMP English meeting was held recently in Kulai. As chair for SPM English, I attended the meeting which was chaired by En Shanmuganathan, Principal Assistant Director, English Unit , JPN Johor. Also present were En Rozlan and Hj Jemali (senior suprevisors) and Pn Eva Abdullah (Pengetua Cemerlang and Chair for PMR). About forty members were present and the state programmes for 2010 were lined up. The programmes are:

• LET (Learn English Together)- primary schools to make use of S-BELT module
• Exam Techniques workshops
• Pedagogy course
• Immersion Programme
• Video-taping of lessons
• Internationalisation programme
• "Common Errors" Module
• "Writing Simple Sentences" Module
• Spelling Competition
• EW20
• Public-speaking/Drama/Play

Public examinations results were also discussed and targets for UPSR, PMR and SPM set by the JPNJ. In my capacity as the chair for SPM, I think PPMP should also look into research on teacher competencies to address the real problems faced in teaching English. We must have realiable data in our decision-making process. Decisions on what strategies to choose must not be based on what we FEEL is the problem. This is to avoid giving the wrong treatment for the wrong  problem. I am wary of the current role of PPMP - module-production seems to be the order of the day whereas it should be more forward-looking and that data-driven culture must be a part of it. Mr Rozlan (senior supervisior English Unit) responded to my idea and said it could be done on a small scale first. I reached home at 6.30 p.m. really exhausted.

Venue: PLGM Bandar Tenggara, Kulai

The PPMP meeting was held to prepare materials for the Spelling Competition in 2010 and to edit any incomplete modules for PMR, SPM and UPSR. Although this was my second meeting here, I still got lost (I have a habit of doing this hehe). To cut a long story short, a young woman who was selling kuih by the roadside showed me the right directions. Suffice to say our mission was accomplished!

State Subject Consultancy Meeting, JPNJ, 18 June 2009

The State Consultancy meeting was held in SMK Taman Kluang Barat for UPSR, PMR and SPM committees. It was chaired by En Mohd Noh(Head of Academic Sector). We now have 54 members in PPMP. Mr Shanmuganathan (English KPP) emphasised on the importance of speaking as a skill that is much neglected in the classrooms. I totally agree with this. Listening and speaking skills must be brought back into the classrooms. Too much emphasis is given to the other skills and much of the fault lies in us teachers too. I hope the SPM PPMP will produce something exciting to enhance speaking skills in the classroom. I was reappointed the chairperson for the SPM English State PPMP and Pn Eva Abdullah, Principal of SMK Dato Menteri, the chairperson for PMR English State PPMP.

Johor State Subject Consultancy Meeting, 11 may 2009

This was the first meeting of the PPMP for the state. I thought it had died a natural death! The meeting was chaired by the State Education Director himself, Tn Hj Sufaat bin Tumin. As in the previous meetings, each chairperson had to report on the programme for the year. There was a suggestion by the director himself that the membership be reviewed as some chairpersons are principals who already have tight schedules. I totally agree with this suggestion. If you study the concept paper again, the consultancy should consist of 'experts' who are well-versed in their subjects. Hence, I think excellent teachers should be playing the lead role here. In the meantime I've got to get the English PPMP moving again with the help of dear MR Shan our English KPP! Wish me luck :)

MGCM Subject Consultancy Meeting, Federal Hotel, KL, 6-8 May 2009

This meeting saw 50 selected Excellent teachers from 10 subjects to become committee members of this national level consultancy. Chaired by Pn Hjh Siti Zainun, KPP Federal Inspectorates, the objective was to share teaching and learning materials and best practices via a subject blog which can be accessed by the public. At hand to train us was En Rizam from IPGM Perlis. I was slightly disappointed as the committee had chosen wordpress instead of blogger, something I am more familiar with. The ten subjects chosen were BM, English, Religious Education, Physics, Chemistry, Biology, History, Geography, Mathematics and Science. The English team consists of Vasantha (GKC), Hema (GKC), Hj Abdullah (GKC), Hjh Normala and myself. A second meeting is in the pipeline to finetune the blog as the launching will be held in July.
