FORM 2 LESSON PLAN: Simple Present and Simple Past

Here's the Form 2 lesson plan for next week. We are going to revise simple present and simple past. From my experience is it always good to contrast the two tenses in one lesson so that SS see the difference. A little extra care is needed to explain irregular verbs though! Feel free to use and share. It would be nice to get some feedback with your classes too. Teaching is an art so don't worry about making mistakes!

Happy teaching!

A Lesson on Friendship

My lesson for tomorrow in 4S1 will be on the theme of friendship. This is a must and I conduct  it without fail every year. But I always do this in mid-term when the bond of friendship in the class has somewhat been established. This is how I plan to conduct the lesson:

Objectives

1. Intensive listening
2. Vocabulary on friendship
3. Values - friendship

Preparation:

1. CD player with song 'You've got a friend' (Yeah yeah, I know this is an old song, but hey I must have been in lower sec when I learnt of this song. A lot more meaningful and sensible than the present head banging songs which mean God knows what!! Besides let the young ones listen to oldies but classics once in a while..)
 2.  Gapped lyrics task sheet.
 3.  Blank memo papers and envelopes with each students' name on it.

Procedure:

1. Write some words from the lyrics on the board. E.g.s down, troubled, eyes, call, clouds, door, cold, hurt, name. Get students to guess/predict what the song is possibly about. (You'll get all sorts on interesting answers).
2. Play the song once or twice and while listening, students fill in the missing words from the song.
3. Discuss the answers to the blanks and get the whole to read the lyrics together aloud.
4. Group work- put students in groups of four and  give them the following tasks:
  • discuss and list out the top five qualities of a good friend and five things good friends don't do
  • complete the statements - Friendship means..., A good friend always...., A good friend never...
5.  Get each group to mention one quality and make a list on the board. Make sure different qualities are listed on the board. Do a quick tally to rank the list. Get responses to the three statements given orally too.
6.  Finally, give students plenty of paper and let them dedicate something nice to their friends ( I Like You slip activity I posted earlier). They put the slips into the relevant envelopes for their friends to read later.
7. If your students give you permission, pick some slips at random and read them in class.
8. You can join in by having an envelope with your name too!

Try it and share your experiences!

Lesson Plan: Using modern songs in the classroom

How about some variety eh? Even teachers get bored with the same mudane activities :) Chui Ling's comments in her journal last week is also food for thought - 'today's lesson is the most boring of all...'(hehe I deserve a medal) But seriously girls, sometimes your class is sooo moody. You can be hyperactive one moment and plain passive the next..besides the mid-year exam is just around the corner. Well, in response to your request, I will use the following songs tomorrow.

1. Thank you (Dido)
Focus:  i) intensive listening ii) opposites iii) prepositions
2. Lemon Tree (Fool's Garden)
Focus:  i) ryhming pairs ii) simple present and present continuous

Meanwhile, am still working on the MICELT presentation in Equatorial Hotel Melaka next week. Hope to catch many friends in the conference!

Michael Jackson lesson plan

Last Friday, we had a lesson using the video 'Thriller'in 5S2. The aim was listening and vocabulary. The class went well except for the technical glitch at first. Mind you it's not easy handling 40 students when the aim is listening..You can find the materials here All you need to do is download the video from youtube. Another possible lesson is here. All the best!

4RC- Singing sensations!

Today we had what was supposed to be a serious lesson on tenses. I decided to forfeit those students who got the answers wrong by singing an English song. Well, Poonjoley got away with ABC (you know the kindergarten song), Pae Chen and Syafiqah setteld for Twinkle-twinkle little star. Then we had Sahira singing 'Bleeding Love' by Miley Cyrus just before the class ended. These girls really surprised me when they joined in the chorus!! Their voices were suddenly loud and they reverberated with the gust of wind blowing through the windows. For a moment, I wondered wether this was really my class! Anyway, I am planning a song activity this Friday- to add some variety in my teaching. So this was a sort of preamble if you like! Remember, variety is the spice of life.

I often reflect what I have been doing in the classroom - whether I have been able to reach my students. Or am I just going through the motions of teaching like a routine. It reminds of this quotation I read somewhere -Many can teach but only a few can reach. This is really the true challenge in teaching. Our students are our best judge. They know when we are prepared or otherwise. They know it when we are not trying our best.

Where is the love?

My 5sc2 students enjoyed the lesson today. They were singing along when we completed the activity (Black Eyed Peas song). It was an activity I promised them some time ago. They seemed to understand the message in the song ( you know, world peace, tolerance and all..). I hope I have shed light some light into how we need to be tolerant of the differences around us, be it race, religion, principles etc. Most of the time we do not understand each other enough and this is what breeds distrust and misunderstandings. Who says rappers are uneducated??
