About Me

I teach English in SM Sains Sembrong, Kluang, Johor, my thirtieth year to be exact. A sweet young thing reminded me in a conference I attended some time back that I shouldn't be proud of that fact. I may have received my license to teach thirty years ago but if I don't keep up with the changes in education, I would be deadwood! Well...deadwood or not, thirty years has been a very long time indeed. It's not a secret that am now tinkering on the idea of retirement, in sya Allah. But before that time comes I still have a lot to do for my students and education as a whole.

On a more personal note, I'm a mother of two. Rasyad, my youngest son is pursuing Information Technology (Networking) in MMU and  my daughter Adibah, tied the knot in January 2013. My other half is also a teacher but we make it a point not to talk about school all the time :) I have a serious problem- I'm addicted to blogging! Despite my efforts to control this passion (?), craze (?), time waster (?), I still blog blog blog blog and blog...It definitely consumes a lot of my time because I learn everything by myself...I don't know if I can ever stop blogging :)

I speak with passion and sometimes this is misunderstood as worrying about something..I think one needs to differentiate between concern and worry. On a rational day (huh?) it will just be concern. I take my job seriously. I'd like to think that I chose teaching as much as teaching chose me. Some people say I inspire them to be good teachers. Alhamdulillah...

What makes me tick...
  • travelling
  • creative ideas in teaching
  • gardening
  • a good book (like 'The Kite Runner')
  • the smell of freshly cut grass...
  • a beautiful sunny day
  • a beautiful tree
  • teaching
  • training
  • blogging
  • when a student shows improvements
  • writing
  • the Red Devils :)
  • baking
  • nescafe
  • cheesecake!
  • great movies (Dead Poet Society etc.)
  • people who are eager to learn
  • professional development
  • people who don't judge easily

My first New York cheesecake...made in Kluang

Cheesecakes are simply irresistible especially New York Cheesecake. I bake sometimes (more like once in  a blue moon) and you can call me a hoarder of recipe books, the latest being  '365 Resipi' by Chef Hanieliza. I started collecting recipe books since I was 17 (perhaps I was mulling on baking as a career then). My culinary skill is nothing to shout about but hey I can leave an impression or two with my moist chocolate cake! And my sardine rolls are not too bad either...

On a more serious note, I love challenges and never want to be stuck in a rut. That is why I keep myself busy with interesting things like writing, blogging, research etc. I need to be intellectually challenged. My greatest fear in life is to be burnt out! On my favourite day (Saturday), I enjoy a quiet breakfast over a mug of nescafe and the morning papers. Two achievements I value most are the Dr Basil Wijasuriya Award as "Best Teacher Presenter' in MELTA International Conference (2009, 2012) and being appointed Master Teacher.

For all the good things that have come my way, I humbly say Alhamdullillah. Although they didn't come easy, I feel so blessed and I know what this really means is I have a lot to give back!

    THOSE WHO CAN DO.
THOSE WHO CAN DO MORE, TEACH.
